The beginning of the local community supported agriculture farm shares sounded like a good time to reinvigorate myself and my blog! This share is from Geauga Family Farms and I pick it up about a mile and a half from my house on Saturday mornings from now into October. We are excited to see what will arrive over the weeks to come. I fall victim at the Farmer's Market to just picking up what I'm familiar with and now to have it picked for me will offer me the chance to try new things.
I know I've got bok choy, onions, kohlrabi, two lettuces and tomatoes here but I'm not real sure about the kale looking stuff with the long stems. I tried kohlrabi last night for the first time and did what many suggest by dicing it and adding it to a salad. It is radishy and adds a pleasant crisp crunch with a little pepper. I picked up Rich Roll's "Finding Ultra" from the library in which he describes completely transforming himself from a couch potato into a lean machine capable of completing an Ultraman on a plant-based diet. If you have to look up what an Ultraman is, don't. It's insane and will make you want to crawl under the bed. However, while I will never complete an Ultra anything, I was inspired to make a blended drink for breakfast which he swears by. So in went a handful of the kale looking stuff and some frozen mango pieces and berries from Trader Joe's along with some peach juice hanging around in my fridge. My Kitchenaid was a bit tasked to blend this up but once in drinkable form, it was surprisingly good. AND not green entirely!
I'm not sure I will go completely plant-based but I can see making a shift in that direction. I'm looking for a way to balance my system and feel better for longer. My older daughter suffers from sinus infections like clockwork in fall and spring. I am wondering if a change in diet might help reduce flair ups. It's hard to have too much control over your diet in college but we'll see what we can experiment with during the summer before she goes back to school.
Until next week!
